Movie Review - The Great Escape

The Great Escape (4 of 5): This is a classic film that I am happy to have finally gotten the chance to watch. Lots of great actors in this real-life story about a prison camp escape during WWII. Those clever Nazis rounded up all the POWs that continued to escape from their camps and put them all together in a new "impenetrable" facility. It does not take long for the prisoners to start testing their new cage and pretty soon they are all working together in an elaborate plot to escape. It’s a great film with some surprising moments and fun action.

randy says,

so, what stops this from being a 5/5?

I know we once ribbed yeh fellers about being a bit too generous with high marks, but I don't think 5/5 would be out of line in this case ...

I don't ask because i think you should change your rating, but rather i think you should include in your review that 'thing' that keeps it from quite achieving cinematic perfection :)

Escape is one of those movies that i feel everyone simply must see at some point, which is why i give it a 2/2 on the randy-bob scale.

Spot on music.

An ensemble cast that spins like a top. Most of the main characters are well developed, and more importantly, the characters that aren't developed in terms of dialogue are performed by actors with skill or perhaps just such striking physical appearance that it seems we can understand the characters and their motivations anyways without explicit explanation.

Gripping plot.

Good spots of comedy.

Tear jerker scenes.

Home made stills.

Neat set.

Motorcycle stunts.

If this movie is lacking in anything, maybe it is just a feminine touch? darn war movies and their lack of bewbs.

related thought - i might just be a sucker for movies that i think of being as very well rounded, with equal parts comedy suspense mystery slapstick action. The best example that comes to mind is probably North by Northwest.

Randy!! Glad to have you back in the comments section!

The reason I did not give this movie a 5/5 is because of the end. I think they should have ended the movie when the prisoners escaped. Instead, we follow the prisoners as they split up and try to get out the country/Europe. I thought that was excessive and got boring, making the movie longer than it needed to be. It all just felt tacked on for the simple purpose of highlighting Steve McQueen in some badass motorcycle chases. Too me, the last 20-25 minutes just felt out of place. 4 of 5.

One of the best. I have always loved this movie since I was a kid. The ending is drawn out, but still a 5/5 for me. Thanks for reviewing this classic!
